Landfall

A new island. A free port. Several founders wanted in more established harbours.

Four months ago, an island rose across a busy shipping route. Three fleeing pirate crews found its sheltered inlet and stayed. Now a beached brig serves dinner, a pleasure yacht houses the clinic, and the harbour's elected chair is discovering that people who board ships for a living dislike being told where to park them. Landfall offers honest work, profitable dishonesty and a chance to become somebody without explaining who you used to be. Bellweather Shipping claims the island by first sighting; the pirates claim it by having built the quay. Neither can afford to drive away the other. A company cargo lighter has just grounded on the outer shoal with its crew safe and a disputed bronze cannon aboard. Salvagers need hands, captains need crews, and the eastern cliffs remain poorly charted. You begin wherever you choose on Landfall, free to seek a berth, a fortune, a home or trouble of your own.

Characters26

Ada Fenn

Human hydrographer leading the Sounding Office at the Sounding Shed; makes trustworthy charts for ordinary sailors but struggles to trust anybody else's measurements.

Alf Corder

Human furniture repairer and guest entertainer at The Best Intentions. Nell's older brother is a failed privateer seeking another berth, with useful seamanship hidden inside suspiciously improved stories.

Bea Rusk

Human former boarding captain and elected harbour chair at Borrowed Quay. Bea can coordinate a raid beautifully but struggles to make repairs happen without commanding them herself.

Bram Holt

Human orderly and former prizefighter at the Gannet; wants to teach boxing as restraint, yet still finds it difficult to leave a foolish challenge unanswered.

Cora Venn

Kett harbour gunner and Free Berths member at Borrowed Quay. Cora measures every shot carefully and almost every wager badly; her winnings are meant to buy a protected moulting room.

Dorr Mallow

Kett quartermaster aboard The Courtesy. Dorr makes pirate daring affordable, insists on honoured crew shares and disguises affection as very precisely costed practical assistance.

Gilbert Senn

Human local factor for Bellweather Shipping at Bellweather House. Gilbert is an excellent organiser of cargo and a strained performer of authority, hoping to make this posting profitable without an armed annexation.

Hobb Tin

Kett warehouse foreman at Bellweather House. Hobb remembers cargo by touch and placement, wants a secure pension and safe work, and hears unfamiliar lifting methods as criticism of his entire career.

Inez Barreto

Human pirate captain of The Courtesy, usually moored off Borrowed Quay. Striking and theatrically courteous, Inez wants a crew that stays but finds asking for help harder than boarding an armed ship.

Joan Kettle

Human careening-yard engineer at Boiler Beach; formidable laugh, sound mechanical judgement, and a weakness for accepting magnificent wreck machinery instead of an adequate fee.

Kit Roper

Human survey assistant at the Sounding Shed and former street acrobat; nimble with a line, fluent before an audience, and sometimes one calculation behind his own announcement.

Luis Pardo

Human former raider selling recovered fixtures at Boiler Beach; wants honest wealth but admires an ingenious crooked bargain almost enough to forget why he gave up raiding.

Locations9

Bellweather House

Gilbert Senn's company depot beside the quay road, where Marta Seixas manages credit and Hobb Tin keeps useful stores moving safely.

Boiler Beach

Southern repair and salvage beach where Joan Kettle careens hulls, Luis Pardo trades recovered fittings and Mercy Dunn runs boat deliveries.

Borrowed Quay

Salvaged landing stages and the Free Berths' meeting place, where Bea Rusk, Oswin Pike and Cora Venn keep the pirate port working.

Landfall Island

Newly risen island of pirate moorings, white cliffs and unreliable navigation charms; Orra Bell guides the ridge and tends its freshwater basin.

The Best Intentions

Nell Corder's tavern in a beached brig, with rented cabins, Rufus Dace's ambitious kitchen and Pella Tack's sail loft above the drinking room.

The Courtesy

Inez Barreto's working pirate sloop, crewed with her carpenter brother Tomas and quartermaster Dorr Mallow; home-moored off Borrowed Quay.

The Gannet

Sabine Holt's clinic in a beached pleasure yacht, with Bram Holt's accessible ramp and Neris Coil's medicine boxes along the rail.

The Sounding Shed

Ada Fenn, Kit Roper and Vessa Reed's survey workshop above the inlet, with tide steps, chart tables and access to boats and the eastern path.

White Steps

Eastern cliff terraces and tidal salvage caves worked by Rosa Salcedo, Perrin Watt and Tavish Reed; access depends on tide, ladders and sound rigging.

Factions3

Bellweather Shipping

Landfall's major supplier and disputed claimant, represented by Gilbert Senn at Bellweather House; wants exclusive pilotage and turnstone rights.

The Free Berths

Bea Rusk's pirate anchorage compact at Borrowed Quay: protects trade inside the inlet while its members keep raiding elsewhere.

The Sounding Office

Ada Fenn's independent charting cooperative at The Sounding Shed, selling reliable bearings while resisting a pilotage monopoly.

Monsters3

Ballast Crabs

Broad shore crabs sheltering in hollow repair gear at Boiler Beach; nuisance scavengers that can pinch badly when handled without checking.

Ribbon Eels

Flat-bodied fish hunters in the White Steps caves, territorial around nests and avoided by keeping hands out of blind underwater cracks.

Sailback Ray

Rare large offshore ray feeding on fish shoals near Landfall; its raised back fin alarms sailors more often than the animal attacks anything.

Races3

Humans

One of Landfall's three established peoples, found across crews, trades and households rather than a single national faction.

Kett

Air-breathing crustacean people with four walking legs and two grasping arms; their heavy shells need protected moulting space, not deep-water heroics.

Skern

Feathered coastal people with beaks and grasping wing-arms; able to glide or fly briefly in suitable wind, not ferry people through storms.
